The resort is owned and operated by Josh and Michelle May. Michelle is a member of the
Anderson family that owns several resorts on Leech Lake where she spent her summers

growing up and helping. Michelle’s career choices led her to discover her passion for customer
service and she will be the smiling face that greets you. Josh and Michelle have been married
for 11 years, and the prospect of owning Chippewa Lodge is a dream come true. Josh loves
hunting, fishing and the outdoors. He is a successful business owner, building his own business
from the ground up; Josh loves a challenge. As a couple, Michelle and Josh encompass many
aspects of successful resort owners They have fresh ideas yet believe in traditional ‘old home’
family values. They have six children and Josh’s & Michelle’s fathers are excited to offer their
expertise and assistance by bringing resort ownership, fishing, and handyman experience with

Chippewa Lodge was historically two neighboring resorts – Safe Harbor Resort and Chippewa Lodge,
one on each side of the natural harbor. Eventually, the two resorts were merged into one large
resort called Chippewa Lodge Resort.
 

Our resort within the Chippewa National Forest and the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe
Reservation. The ancestors of the Dakota and Ojibwe occupied this region for thousands of
years before the Chippewa National Forest was created. Today, nearly half of the National
Forest falls within the boundaries of the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe Reservation. The name
Chippewa is derived by French explorers who found it difficult to pronounce the name Ojibwe.
To end any confusion, the Ojibwe and Chippewa are not only the same tribe, but
the same word pronounced a little differently due to accent. ... Ojibwe, or Chippewa, comes
from the Algonquin word "otchipwa" (to pucker) and refers to the distinctive puckered seam
of Ojibwe moccasins. The Ojibwe, Ojibwa, Chippewa, or Saulteaux are an Anishinaabe people of
Canada and the northern Midwestern United States.
